Replica Optimization Service - ROS - Optor

The Replica Optimization Service is an internal service component of the WP2 Replica Management Services. Currently it only implements short-term-optimization as described here. ROS depends on two underlying services:
  •  The network monitoring services by WP7 to determine the estimated cost for file transfer over the WAN. 
  •  The WP5 Storage Element SE to determine the access cost for a specified file, i.e. how much time it takes to make the data accessible. The SE may have various mass storage media underneath where the data resides and depending on what kind of media the file is on (tape, CDROM, disk) it may take some time to prepare (stage) the file for access.
Based on these access time estimators ROS will choose the 'best' replica among many as a function of the accessing site. For more detail, see
